Because every sword is made and finished by hand, slight variations in the final dimensions or weight may occur. These small differences are a natural part of traditional craftsmanship and do not affect the sword's quality or performance.

Overview

Inspired by archaeological finds from the 10th and 11th centuries, this sword is based on the Petersen Type M, one of the distinctive sword types of the late Viking Age.

Characterized by its elegant proportions, wide blade, and distinctive hilt design, the Type M represents the continued development of Viking sword craftsmanship during a period of transition toward early medieval sword forms. Rather than being an exact replica, this sword is a modern interpretation designed to preserve the appearance, balance, and handling characteristics of historical weapons while meeting today's standards for durability, safety, and performance.

Designed for historical reenactment, medieval combat training, and collectors, it combines historical authenticity with the reliability required for regular use.

 

Historical Inspiration

The Petersen Type M sword was used mainly during the 10th and early 11th centuries and represents one of the later developments of Viking Age sword design. It is recognized by its characteristic hilt, often featuring a distinctive pommel shape and carefully balanced proportions.

Compared to earlier Viking sword types, Type M swords show a transition toward more developed medieval forms while maintaining the traditional features of Viking weapon design. Their construction provided an effective combination of cutting power, control, and maneuverability.

Examples of Type M swords have been discovered across Scandinavia and regions connected with Viking expansion, including parts of Northern and Eastern Europe. Their presence reflects the widespread influence of Viking craftsmanship and warfare traditions during the late Viking Age.

While inspired by historical originals, this sword has been carefully adapted for modern reenactment combat. Its proportions, balance, and construction preserve the character of Viking Age weapons while providing the durability and performance required for regular training and controlled fighting.

 

Construction and Handling

Every sword is handcrafted in our family forge in Poland using traditional techniques combined with modern manufacturing methods.

The blade is carefully balanced to provide responsive handling, good edge alignment, and reliable control during sparring and reenactment combat. The beech wood grip is covered with a double layer of leather, creating a comfortable and secure hold. If preferred, one layer of leather can easily be removed or replaced to achieve a slimmer grip.

Each sword is individually assembled, fitted, and finished by hand before being carefully inspected prior to shipment.

Materials and Heat Treatment

The blade is forged from high-quality 50HF spring steel, selected for its excellent combination of toughness, flexibility, and impact resistance.

Every blade is professionally heat-treated to 48 HRC. After years of testing different steels and hardness levels, we found this combination provides the best balance between durability and flexibility for historical combat.

A properly hardened blade is able to flex under load and return to its original shape without permanent deformation. At the same time, it remains resistant to cracking and breakage during normal reenactment use.
