Large Pommel Variant

This version features a larger and heavier pommel, resulting in a slightly higher overall weight. The additional weight at the rear of the sword shifts the point of balance closer to the hand, giving the sword a lively feel and excellent control while maintaining historical proportions.

This option is well suited to those who prefer a sword with a more substantial feel and responsive handling.

Lightweight Variant

This version is optimized to reduce overall weight by carefully refining the blade and other components while maintaining strength and durability.

The lower weight makes the sword easier to maneuver and helps reduce fatigue during extended training sessions, making it an excellent choice for regular practice and prolonged use.

Overview

Inspired by archaeological finds from the 10th and 11th centuries, this sword combines the classic Oakeshott Type X blade with a Petersen Type X pommel. Rather than being an exact replica, it is a modern interpretation designed to preserve the appearance and handling characteristics of historical swords while meeting today's standards for durability, safety, and performance.

Designed for historical reenactment, medieval combat training, and collectors, it offers the balance and reliability expected from a sword built for regular use.

Historical Inspiration

The Oakeshott Type X blade is one of the most recognizable sword types of the Viking Age and the early Middle Ages. Characterized by a broad blade with a long fuller, it was designed primarily for powerful cutting attacks while maintaining excellent handling.

The Petersen Type X pommel, widely used during the 11th century, is distinguished by its large mushroom-shaped form. Swords of this type have been discovered across Scandinavia, England, Germany, Poland, and Kievan Rus, reflecting their widespread use throughout Northern and Eastern Europe.

While inspired by these historical originals, this sword has been carefully adapted for modern reenactment combat without compromising its historical character.

Construction and Handling

Every sword is handcrafted in our family forge in Poland using traditional techniques combined with modern manufacturing methods.

The blade is carefully balanced to provide responsive handling, good edge alignment, and reliable control during sparring and reenactment combat. The beech wood grip is covered with a double layer of leather, creating a comfortable and secure hold. If preferred, one layer of leather can easily be removed or replaced to achieve a slimmer grip.

Each sword is individually assembled, fitted, and finished by hand before being carefully inspected prior to shipment.

Materials and Heat Treatment

The blade is forged from high-quality 50HF spring steel, selected for its excellent combination of toughness, flexibility, and impact resistance.

Every blade is professionally heat-treated to 48 HRC. After years of testing different steels and hardness levels, we found this combination provides the best balance between durability and flexibility for historical combat.

A properly hardened blade is able to flex under load and return to its original shape without permanent deformation. At the same time, it remains resistant to cracking and breakage during normal reenactment use.
